In this exhibition, I take “gentle femininity” as the central concept. Through the transformation and symbolism of everyday objects, I explore the complex emotions and inner strength of women in contemporary society. Elements such as lace, glass, pearls, combs, betta fish, and butterflies appear in the works. These images, which may seem fragile yet carry resilience, not only reflect cultural and historical ideas about women but also serve as vessels for my own feelings and life experiences.
The interplay of light, color, and texture creates a space between dream and reality, allowing viewers to connect visually and emotionally, and to sense the layered tensions behind tenderness. With these delicate yet resilient objects, I aim to reinterpret “tenderness” not as a synonym for endurance or obedience, but as a force of positivity and self-awareness. Ultimately, the works invite viewers to reconsider the relationship between women and “gentleness,” and to recognize it as a universal emotional experience that transcends both gender and time.
【 Light in Tranquility 】
Light in Tranquility continues and develops the direction of my recent works. By projecting and reflecting on the stories of my sister and female friends, I piece together an emotional experience that feels both near and distant. In this process, the idea of female identity becomes a mix of confusion and longing, uncertainty and searching. It is this unclear yet powerful emotional texture that makes me more sensitive when observing women’s emotions, and allows me to capture moments that are hard to put into words but stay deeply in the heart, then transform them into images.
The exhibition comes from my long-term reflections on the many sides of tenderness. It separates tenderness from the narrow image of obedience or passivity, and reinterprets it as a quiet but resilient quality of life — a force that flows between contradictions and inner emotions. Tranquility represents a mental space where one can set aside outside noise and listen to the inner voice, while light symbolizes the sparks that remain after darkness, carrying hope, resilience, and the possibility to keep shining.
I also draw from Eileen Chang’s novel The Golden Cangue, using its layered symbols and colors to explore how female objects are described. Through this, I reflect both the time I live in and the challenges faced by contemporary women. The women in Chang’s writing struggle between repression and contradiction, showing both restriction and resistance under the traditional frame of tenderness. This inspired me to explore more deeply how women break free from society’s fixed gaze and bravely pursue self and inner strength.
In visual language, I treat color as a carrier of both emotion and thought. Through the play of light, shadow, and detail, I hope viewers can feel the rhythm of women’s resilience and courage, and gain inspiration to face life with strength. Here, tenderness is not only a soft emotion, but also a concentrated force and attitude. It can resist, it can heal, and it can be courage and transcendence in front of reality.
In form and symbols, I continue to use feminine objects as metaphors. Pearls suggest dreams and the gentle shine of the inner self; lace carries both delicacy and protection; the mirror is both a surface for viewing and being viewed, and also a place for self-reflection. Reframed and reinterpreted, these objects become containers of memory and emotion. The use of low saturation and soft brightness further highlights tranquility, placing the images between reality and dream—like fragments of a subconscious theater that lead viewers into layers of subtle yet deep emotions.
Light in Tranquility aims to show not only the gentle beauty of women, but also the energy that keeps shining through hardship and change. This energy is quiet yet impossible to ignore. It can light up the self and create resonance with others. Tenderness is never the same as weakness. True tenderness is a strength born from love and reflection. It shows inner courage and firmness, and the light that continues to glimmer.
