Unfinished Meander

If life is destined to be a magnificent adventure, then a river can never simply run straight to the sea. In Unfinished Meander, artist Chih Chi Hsu envisions creation as a journey that runs parallel to life—a winding, unpredictable current that meanders, detours, at times gently ripples, at others bursts its banks, yet always moves forward. Beginning with the pliability of clay, she tempers each piece through cycles of inversion and refinement, carefully sculpting a dialogue between light, form, and space. This ongoing process mirrors Hsu’s own navigation between vulnerability and resolve, reflecting a quiet but persistent momentum through life’s shifting terrain.

“White is inclusive—like life itself: imperfect, and needing no perfection.” For years, Hsu has worked almost exclusively in white, balancing between meticulous refinement and deliberate retention. Through extensive polishing, she removes traces of time and emotion, allowing the most delicate light and shadow to emerge; yet she also permits subtle irregularities to remain—tiny topographies that mark the passage of time. To Hsu, each curve and gradation of light is a tangible echo of life’s path.

The seemingly incidental turns are in fact accumulations of choice, just as life unfolds in loops, never linear, never repeated. By looking back at her own evolving practice and personal journey, Hsu reframes each unfinished attempt, each pause and setback, as essential bends in the river—a reckoning with the self, an ongoing response to what remains unresolved. This river does not promise arrival. Instead, it offers a space for viewers to encounter the unwritten segments of their own lives, and to find resonance and rest within the stillness of the current.

Chih Chi Hsu

Chih Chi Hsu holds an MFA from the Graduate Institute of Applied Arts at Tainan National University of the Arts. Working primarily in ceramics, she explores the expressive potential of curves and spatial rhythm to construct forms that are both poetic and precise. Her practice creates quiet, light-filled spaces that reflect on the layered dimensions of life. Through a deliberately distanced engagement with reality, she navigates the space between the tangible and the intangible, continually remeasuring presence and essence.

Hsu has participated in numerous international residencies and exhibitions. Her work has received multiple accolades, including the Silver Award at the Taiwan Ceramics Biennale and First Prize at the Taipei Ceramics Awards, and has been selected for major events such as the Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale in Korea and the 57th Faenza Prize in Italy. Her works are held in both public and private collections, including the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, the White Rabbit Gallery in Australia, and Römhild Schloss Glucksburg in Germany, reflecting both the depth and reach of her artistic practice.
